What is periodontics?

Periodontics is an area of dental specialty focused on addressing the health of your gum tissue, as well as the bone and ligaments that work with your gums to hold your teeth into place. Periodontal care focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease.

Gingivitis

The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis is also reversible if you take prompt action to improve your dental hygiene. At this stage, there is no significant bone damage.

Periodontitis

Without treatment, gingivitis often progresses into periodontitis. This advanced form of gum disease involves significant inflammation and risk of bone loss and bacteria transfer into your bloodstream.

If you suspect you have gum disease, the team at Campustown Dental can help.

How do I know if I might need periodontics treatment?

Gum disease creates clear symptoms that something is amiss. Responding to these changes is an important part of fighting off gum disease.

Some of the signs you may need periodontal treatment include:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Painful gum tissue
  • Swollen gums
  • Abnormally red or darkened gums
  • Pain when chewing
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums

The best way to know if you have gum disease is to come in for a routine dental exam.

How is gum disease treated?

Your dentist advises you on which treatment approach best fits your needs. One outstanding option is called Perio Protect®. This treatment uses custom-fitted clear plastic trays called Perio Trays™ that hold medication against your gum tissue.

The system ensures that the medication reaches the area where gum tissue pulls away from the surface of your teeth. You simply apply a thin line of the medicated gel into the trays and snap them in place. You only need to wear your Perio Trays for a few minutes a day.

Not only does this treatment disinfect your gum pockets, but the solution also freshens your breath and whitens your teeth. Perio Protect may be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other treatment efforts, including:

  • Scaling and root planing
  • Gum reshaping
  • Laser treatment
  • Regenerative treatments
